Alcohol and the Kingdom of God

Preston Sprinkle, a faculty member at Eternity Bible College (my new workplace), has recently written a series of blog posts on what the Bible says and does not say about drinking alcohol. I have had a lot of conversations about this topic in recent years and believe I have a healthier understanding of how a Christian can and should use alcohol than I ever had growing up. It involves understanding your culture, submitting to your church leadership, loving your brothers and sisters in Christ in every situation, and reading and believing all that the Scripture says about alcohol.

His posts are the best I've seen dealing with this topic and I suggest you read them all in order if you've ever had questions or problems with drinking. The final is by far the best and takes the conversation to a place I've never seen it go by others who either adamantly oppose drinking or those who freely drink more than they should. Both groups tend to impose legalistic rules and judgments on people who indulge or refrain. But if we really listen to what God says to His people about drinking, we will see that it is intricately tied to the hope of new creation, the kingdom of God, and how we are to live in community with others.
